A job shadow is a half-day career awareness activity in which a student spends time one-on-one with an employee observing daily activities and asking questions about the job and the workplace.

Job shadowing is a valued work-based activity that provides unpaid career awareness or exploratory activities in a career cluster area. Job shadowing allows elementary, middle, or high school students AND teachers to observe an experienced employee on the work site for four or more hours to learn about a particular occupation or industry.

This one-time work-site experience provides students or teachers with an opportunity to ask questions about the job, the company and the career field: to tour the company: and if possible, to engage in a hands-on activity designed to apply academic and career-related knowledge and skills in a real-world setting.
